LACRIMAE RERUM

The Roman poet Virgil phrase „lacrimae rerum” („tears of things”) derives from Book I, line 462 of the Aeneid (c. 29–19 BC) – remebering this ancient phrase we could think of the meaning „there are tears of (or for) things.” – regarding the so difficult times we live on.

Our salty tears are very similar with the ocean’s water – inside each person there is a place like an ocean, and it could be reveled only with sincere emotions. Different type of rocks, or gemstones can have a liquid shape when they are melted in the „womb” of a vulcano. Even real tears can solidify or dry by crystallisation.

Do not try to find here a „liquid” shape – because my textile tears, were created from small pieces of fabric. My „tears” are solid, like gemstones, cristals, having an unique shape and colour, made out of the finest and softest fabrics – silk, korean ramie, sometimes dried flowers, remains of all kind (vulcanic stones, minerals, shells, hair, small pieces of traditional fabrics, etc.). I think only about the ideea of how to evoke the unseen realm of the human emotions – as a visual investigation in my bojagi related art. Art should transmit all those unique feelings, and what I try to express with the language of my mini bojagi’s, with the so called textile tears is this connection between me, my memories, and all those persons that I cherish. All these pure ideas relates me to my existence.

TEXTILE TEARS

unique mini bojagi

The story behind my „textile tears” started with a strong wish to create something unique, using some of the koreean stitching techique used to create one of the koreean wrapping cloth – the bojagi. It took me more than 4 years of thinking when I started to play with a piece of romanian raw silk, the so called fabrik „borangik” (used as a scarf in the traditional costume) – later I find out that „gik” – „직(물)” in koreean means „fabrik” and I used the gam-chim-jil (감침질) stitching method – and a „tear” came out.

This small forms, apparently with a random but unique shape evoke a place where anybody can find a connection with the purest memory, related to a feeling – the moment when we cry is the most sincere human feeling – it could be a tear of joy, sadness, longing, tear for loosing somebody (very close), tear for being sad, lonely or sometimes betrayed.

Frozen TEAR – (Tear of Madonna della Neve)

Work realized for the Competition MINIARTEXTIL 33 – Como, “L’ARTE COME PREGHIERA”. This small „frozen tear” is like a small prayer – a firm answer for all the dangerous threats of the time we live in. Tears are the most sincere way of man to express himself – when the Mother of God also cries – only our prayers can console her. The miracle performed by the Icon of the „Madonna della Neve” (Rome in the Santa Maria Maggiore – when it snowed in the middle of summer (5th of August in 358 after Christ) – is the reason why I chose the title FROZEN TEAR! Work dedicated to Pope FRANCISCUS!
